Equisetum japonicum or the Japanese Horsetail is a semi-aquatic plant. This evergreen plant with a bright green erect fleshy stem barred with black rings. It does not have leaves. They stay green all year round. This water plant is well suited to gardens with ponds thanks to its water-filtering function, which keeps ponds ‘healthy’. If this easy to grow plant is kept moist and well-fed it can reach a metre or more high. It can also be grown in a container as a houseplant on a bright window shelf or conservatory.

Horsetail, which comes from prehistoric times, was found in fossils dating back to the Paleozoic era. It has been used in the medical field. Since including silica, it’s still used for its diuretic, remineralizing and tonic properties.
