Their native range extends from South Carolina (Canna flaccida) south to Argentina and includes the Caribbean islands. Canna are valuable as a food source in certain cultures because their rhizomes contain a high quality starch. The primary species used for food production is Canna indica. The starch (commonly called achira) is used in Vietnam to make high quality "cellophane" noodles.
