Canna species are native to semi-tropical and tropical parts of North and South America. Their native range extends from South Carolina (Canna flaccida) south to Argentina and includes the Caribbean islands. In their native habitat, Canna live in damp shady locations along the margins of rivers and lakes.

Canna are valuable as a food source in certain cultures because their rhizomes contain a high quality starch. The primary species used for food production is Canna indica. The starch (commonly called achira) is used in Vietnam to make high quality "cellophane" noodles. In the modern era of agriculture, canna is only rarely used as a primary food source, as it has been replaced by more nutritious and higher yielding crops such as potatoes and corn. Canna have been cultivated as a food crop for over 4000 years in Central and South America.

A multi-colored gem of a flower, Canna Lily Cleopatra blooms have streaks, speckles and blocks of vivid color for a truly unique and textural bloom! These gorgeous semi-dwarf Canna Lilies are out to make a statement, just like the famous queen of the Nile: Cleopatra! Looking almost as though they were on fire, this canna's blooms are yellow mixed with a speckles of bronze red. Growing 36-48" tall, this plant loves the sun and will bloom July through September.

Growing Olive Trees in Containers is a great way to keep olive trees! Even the smallest garden or balcony can accommodate a pot grown olive tree. The ability to place your plant in the best possible location regardless of soil conditions is perhaps the greatest advantage of pot growing.

An olive tree needs the sunniest spot available in your balcony. It can cope with a bit of shade but too much and your tree will start to degrade. Similarly, it will tolerate a breezy site but it will not thrive if exposed to constant northerly or easterly winds.

Split-leaf Philodendron is not actually a philodendron but a woody epiphytic vine that climbs by adventitious roots. It starts its life as a terrestrial plant, turning epiphytic once it comes into contact with a sturdy tree it can climb, sending down long roots to get nutrients from the soil. It is native to tropical regions of North and South America and can grow to 70 feet tall, though it stays between 6-8 feet in most home environments. Edible fruit is produced in its native habitat that is said to taste like a cross between a banana and pineapple. All other parts of the plant are toxic.

In NC, it is grown as a houseplant. Its showy leaves are conspicuously lobed with elongated holes throughout the blade. Young leaves develop this characteristic over time. This plant can get quite large and sturdy support is necessary to prevent the stems from breaking. It typically does not produce flowers nor fruits in interior landscapes. It prefers an average warm temperature of 60-85 degrees, moderate brightness but not direct sunlight, and high humidity.
