Split-leaf Philodendron is not actually a philodendron but a woody epiphytic vine that climbs by adventitious roots. It starts its life as a terrestrial plant, turning epiphytic once it comes into contact with a sturdy tree it can climb, sending down long roots to get nutrients from the soil. It is native to tropical regions of North and South America and can grow to 70 feet tall, though it stays between 6-8 feet in most home environments. Edible fruit is produced in its native habitat that is said to taste like a cross between a banana and pineapple. All other parts of the plant are toxic.

In NC, it is grown as a houseplant. Its showy leaves are conspicuously lobed with elongated holes throughout the blade. Young leaves develop this characteristic over time. This plant can get quite large and sturdy support is necessary to prevent the stems from breaking. It typically does not produce flowers nor fruits in interior landscapes. It prefers an average warm temperature of 60-85 degrees, moderate brightness but not direct sunlight, and high humidity.

Pot size: 32 cm
Height: 130 cm

The size of the leaves is 60x60cm on average.

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate moderate shade. Avoid direct sunlight
Temperature: Needs to be kept warm. Ideal: between 18-27°C. Lower than this will reduce the plant’s growth rate, can tolerate 12°C
Water: Water when the soil has started to dry-out.
Humidity: Loves average to high humidity levels.
Fertilizer: Feed once a month with a balanced fertiliser during growing season.
Height & Growth Rate: Slow to moderate growth, but depends upon the conditions.
Toxicity: Toxic if ingested. Keep away from children & animals.

Growing Dracaena Marginata outdoors is only possible in warm climates because this plant can’t stand the cold.

The Dragon Tree is a widely popular plant for office spaces and homes. Dracaena Marginata is one of the plants on NASA's air filtering plants list that removes toxins from the air. Dragon Tree is ideal for anyone who wants foliage without too much fuss.

All year long, mist water on the leaves, preferably soft water. As a general rule, try to increase humidity in the air around the plant.

Tree is one of the easier houseplants to care for.

Dracaena Marginata ‘Magenta’ Care
Light: Dragon Tree prefers medium to bright indirect light but, like most Dracaena, can tolerate a vast range of light levels, including partial shade..
Temperature: This plant thrives in average household temperatures: between 16-24°C.
Water: Water your plant the soil begins to dry-out. Ensure the plant has proper drainage to prevent root rot developing.
Humidity: Can tolerate some dry, indoor air, however increased humidity will help stave off brown leaf tips. Consider giving your plant the occasional misting.
Fertilizer: Feed twice a month during growing season.
Height & Growth Rate: Dragon Tree is a slow growing palm which usually reaches an ultimate height of 1 to 2 metres..
Air purifying: Yes
Toxicity: Toxic if ingested. Keep away from children & animals.

Compacta as the name suggests is a compact version of Dracaena fragrans. The multi-stem version provides height and helps display the tropical lush deep green foliage at different levels on separate stems. Dracaena Compacta likes bright conditions and enjoys slightly raised humidity. Like all Dracaena it helps purify the surrounding air.
