Citrus are not hardy in Britain but can be grown in pots outdoors in summer and brought inside for winter. Of all citrus, most gardeners grow lemons; kumquats are the most cold tolerant; others, like limes and grapefruits, need more warmth.

Citrus in pots can be put outdoors in summer, in a sheltered sunny position, but only when temperatures increase, from mid-June until late September. Keep some fleece handy in case of sudden cold nights in early summer. Low temperatures will inhibit flowering and may cause damage or even death.

A minimum winter night temperature of 10°C is needed for lemons and limes. Calamondin oranges need a minimum winter night temperature of 13°C.

Ficus Benjamina Exotica Double Spiral

This lovely variety of the Ficus Benjamina displays an architectural double spiral stem. The Benjamina has an impressive plume of dark green glossy leaves giving a wonderful canopy effect. The Benjamina as with most Ficus we need a well-lit position in the home or office to achieve the best results.

Ficus Benjamina Exotica, also known as the Weeping Fig, is one of our most popular house or office plants. It is an evergreen tree with a light-grey trunk, with dense, dark glossy leaves. Originally be found in India, northern Australia, and Southeast Asia.

Weeping fig has a braided stem and is actually several plants growing together. Its beautiful glossy foliage has a very ornamental and attractive look. Ficus Benjamina is also a superstar at cleaning nasty pollutants from the air, including formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene and toluene. They are easy to grow in a variety of locations within the home or perhaps the office. They can even be grown out of doors in summer.

The Ficus Benjamina Exotica Care
Light: Bright light is what keeps the weeping fig happy, that is partially shaded. A spot that receives some sun and shade during the day is great.
Temperature: Average household temperatures of 16°C to 25°C are perfect for these houseplants. Try not to allow temperatures to decrease lower than 10°C, although they can handle a bit lower, without problems.
Water: Allow the compost to dry to a certain extent (at the top) between each watering with tepid filtered or distilled water. Over-watering and under-watering can cause the leaves to drop. To identify the problem check if the leaves are crispy or if they fold easily. If they fold then the problem could be over-watering, and if crispy the tree could be under watered. Add enough water that can seep from the top soil to the drainage holes, at the bottom of the container and remove the left over water to allow enough oxygen to the plant roots. Less watering in the winter is to be carried out.
Humidity: Misting the leaves in the summer is advised.
Fertilizer: Requires fertilizing from spring to early fall.
Toxicity: This plant is toxic. Keep away from children & animals.

Growing Olive Trees in Containers is a great way to keep olive trees! Even the smallest garden or balcony can accommodate a pot grown olive tree. The ability to place your plant in the best possible location regardless of soil conditions is perhaps the greatest advantage of pot growing.

An olive tree needs the sunniest spot available in your balcony. It can cope with a bit of shade but too much and your tree will start to degrade. Similarly, it will tolerate a breezy site but it will not thrive if exposed to constant northerly or easterly winds.
